Understanding Your Dental Insurance: What Are Direct Reimbursement Plans?

If you are in the market for dental insurance, you probably have been sorting through the different plan options that are available on the market today. In this regard, you may have encountered direct reimbursement plans and you may be wondering what is entailed in regard to direct reimbursement plans.

The Benefits of Direct Reimbursement Plans in the 21st Century

In many ways, many consumers actually do prefer direct reimbursement plans when it comes to dental insurance coverage. The primary reason that people tend to appreciate direct insurance plans for their dental insurance is the fact that there is little for them to do in the way of claims.

How Direct Reimbursement Plans Actually Work for You

When you get a direct reimbursement plans for your dental insurance coverage you go to the dentist’s office, pay the bill and your dental insurance company is notified of the dental visit. The dental insurance company will then provide a direct reimbursement to you for the dental office visit.

Of course, when it comes to direct reimbursement plans and dental insurance coverage, you do have to either pay the bill to your dentist up front or make arrangements on your own with your dentist to make payments when you actually do receive payment from your insurance company.

You Maintain Choice of Dentists

In most instances, under the provisions of direct reimbursement dental plans, a consumer can see any dentist he or she wants for his or her services. Many people certainly like to be able to choose their own dentists. They do not want to sacrifice choice for the coverage that can be made available through dental insurance coverage. Indeed, many people have elected not to obtain dental insurance in the past because they were afraid that they would not be able to see the dentist of their choice for dental care and services.

Thus, and again, when it comes to dental insurance, people tend to really appreciate direct reimbursement plans. They get to keep the dentist they want and do not have to pay an arm and a leg to do so.

Understanding What Direct Reimbursement Means for You

You need to keep in mind that direct reimbursement is a method of claim payment delivery -- not a type of dental insurance per se. If you elect to obtain a dental insurance policy or plan that involves direct reimbursement, you do need to understand that you will be paying the costs associated with your dental care up front and in the first instance. (Of course, many people prefer an indemnity plan that allows you to obtain dental care services, procedures and treatments after which a claim will be submitted directly for the services you have obtained. If something ends up not being covered by your dental insurance, you will end up being billed at a later date.)

You do run a risk with direct reimbursement plans in that if the dental insurance company decides to decline payment on a claim initially, you will be out of the money you already have paid to the dentist. With other types of indemnity plans in which the insurance company pays a claim directly, you do not bear such a great risk that you will be left holding the bag for an entire dental claim without any more immediate recourse for reconsideration.
