Understanding a Dental PPO

In your search for a dental insurance company or a dental plan you may have ended up scratching your head. You really may not know where to turn when it comes to trying to find a dental insurance policy or a dental plan that is right for you. During your search, you may have come across something called a dental PPO. Having seen reference to a dental PPO, you may be wondering what a dental PPO was all about.

What Does PPO Stand For?

Starting with the basics, the PPO “part” of dental PPO stands for preferred provider organization. In other words, dental PPO is the shortened version for dental preferred provider organization.

What a Preferred Provider Organization is Not

A preferred provider organization, a dental PPO, is a dental plan that is not insurance per se. Instead, through a dental PPO a consumer becomes part of an organization that maintains a list of dentists through which the consumer can obtain dental services. In other words, the dental PPO maintains an association with a list of preferred providers -- dentists that are in the treatment and care network created and established by the dental PPO.

Using the Preferred Provider Network

As long as you stay within the network, as long as you utilize the services offered by the dentists within the preferred provider network established by the dental PPO, you will pay no charge or a set charge (lower that the normal charge) for services from these dentists, from these preferred providers.

Obtaining Service Off the PPO Network

If you elect to obtain dental treatment from dentists who are not a part of the dental PPO provider network (again, the preferred providers), you will end up having to pay for the services. In some instances, a dental PPO may provide some coverage for a person who seeks dental assistance from a dentist who is not a part of the PPO provider network. But, this is rare.

The PPO and Cost

One of the benefits associated with a dental PPO is found in cost. A dental PPO usually is less expensive than more traditional forms of dental insurance. Thus, a consumer can receive solid coverage through a dental PPO and will not have to pay a significant amount of money to obtain that coverage.

Any time that you may be interested in finding out more about dental insurance plans that are available in your state, you should consider contacting the insurance commissioner’s office. As a general rule, the insurance commissioner in a state will be able to provide you with basic information about different insurance products that are available in your state -- including a PPO.

Armed with this overview, you now can make a decision to whether or not a dental PPO is right for you. If you have any other questions regarding a particular dental PPO, remember that the Internet and World Wide Web can provide a useful resource to you when you are seeking information about a dental PPO.
